Beginning with the 2017/2018 school year, Salem City Schools will be starting the 1-to-1 initiative at the Jr/Sr High School and Southeast Elementary School. The initiative is designed to cut down on textbook cost through the growth of digital technology and course media online. The students at the Jr/Sr High will be given Chromebooks, in protective cases, that they are required to take home each night. Southeast Elementary will have enough Chromebooks for each student in attendance, but the Chromebooks themselves will remain at the building.
Going 1:1 with Chromebooks will enable our students to get comfortable with the ever-evolving technological world that they will venture into after graduation and allow them to learn how to navigate and utilize various apps and programs that will unlock easier methods of web usage. The Chromebooks will cut down on education spending over the long term due to eliminating the need for updating costly textbooks and also cutting back on the need for paper since each student will have a specific login for the Google App Suite, which includes Google Docs and Sheets. Docs and Sheets are Google’s online-only answers to Word and Excel, respectively.
Students will be able to pick up the Chromebooks closer to the start of school this year. More information will be coming from our superintendent and principals regarding policies and distribution dates and times. We are so excited for taking this large step into the future and becoming more technologically advanced as a district.
